A Chilling Blueprint for Global Subjugation
H.G. Wells’ “The Open Conspiracy” is not merely a theoretical essay but a meticulously crafted instruction manual for the systematic dismantling of human freedom & the establishment of an absolute global authority. Masked beneath the utopian promises of peace, health & endless scientific progress, the book outlines a terrifying vision of the future where sovereign nations, individual liberties & traditional faiths are eradicated. Wells calls for a “world revolution” orchestrated by a self appointed elite, whose ultimate goal is to assimilate all of humanity into a highly regulated, mechanical collective. For those who value independence & democratic self determination, this book serves as a stark warning of a totalitarian nightmare disguised as human salvation where science dictates every aspect of existence & human beings are managed like biological assets.
The Open Conspiracy as a Subversive Cultural Replacement Movement
At its core, the Open Conspiracy is a radical cultural Replacement movement designed to infiltrate & overthrow the existing social order from within. Wells demands a “creative resistance to the inertia” of the current world, urging his followers to reject the traditional governments, economic lives & forms of behavior that currently govern humanity. This movement must operate in the daylight, openly declaring its intention to criticize everything in human life from top to bottom, finding all established institutions to be “not good enough”.
To achieve this total societal overhaul, the movement must instigate a “revolution in education”. Wells views current educational organizations as conservative forces that drag upon the wheels of progress by preserving outworn traditions. He insists that the old world teachers & schools must be aggressively reformed or completely replaced. The Open Conspiracy must create its own educational laboratories, shielding its children from the “infection of the old racial & national hatreds” & the “rubbishy head content” taught in conventional schools. The movement must carve out its own distinct society, cutting off all thought of returning to the old order. Wells insists that any compromise with ancient loyalties or obsolescent standards of honor is impossible; these traditions must be treated like a cancer, where the “whole growth is removed” to prevent it from returning to life.
The New World Religion of the Collective
Perhaps the most surprising aspect of Wells’ vision is his explicit demand that the Open Conspiracy should become, “frankly a world religion”. He recognizes that the human mind has a deep, instinctive desire for devotion but he seeks to strip this religious impulse of all its historical, spiritual & supernatural elements. In this new modernized faith, the concept of a personal God is pushed so far from actuality that it becomes an “entirely negative expression”. The traditional histories, symbols, sacraments & rituals of past faiths are dismissed as encumbrances that merely “harbour disputes & waste our scanty emotions”. Instead, this new religion is entirely objective & materially focused. It replaces otherworldly salvation with a demand for total subservience to the realization of a global social & political order. The modern religious impulse, according to Wells, must be directed entirely toward the solution of worldly problems & the creation of a unified world commonwealth. Individuality is minimized & the soul is taught to escape from itself by merging into the greater life of the species. In this chilling new dogma, the individual is nothing & the collective is everything. As Wells declares, the first sentence in this modern creed must be, not “I believe” but “I give myself”.
The Imposition of a One World Government
The ultimate political objective of this new religious cultural replacement is the complete obliteration of all sovereign states & the establishment of a single “world commonwealth” or “world directorate”. Wells argues that the current system of independent nations is a dangerous, out of date patchwork that inevitably leads to catastrophic wars & economic waste. The Open Conspiracy demands the “complete assertion, practical as well as theoretical, of the provisional nature of existing governments” meaning that no current nation has the right to exist permanently. Patriotism is repeatedly denounced as a “virus” & loyalty to one’s king or country is branded as “plain treason to mankind”. This new one world government will not resemble the democratic parliaments or assemblies of today. Instead, it will function as an intricate, overarching “direction” managed by “suitably equipped groups of the most interested, intelligent & devoted people”. This world directorate will assume control over the earth’s natural resources, transport, credit & staple production, replacing private ownership with a highly organized form of collective ownership. A central “bureau of information & advice” will act as the brain of the modern community, determining global economic activities & distributing resources. Wells makes it clear that the Open Conspiracy will not rely on passive resistance to achieve this global monopoly where it meets opposition from obstructive governments, the movement “must become a fighting force” & actively combat those who stand in its way. He casually admits that the establishment of this world community will exact a heavy price in “toil, suffering & blood”.
Science as the Supreme Dictator & Biological Control
In the world of the Open Conspiracy, science is elevated to the role of supreme dictator. The entire movement is explicitly driven “in the name of and for the sake of science and creative activity”. Wells has nothing but contempt for “crowd psychology” & the “indiscriminating rule of universal democracy”. He vehemently rejects the Marxist reliance on the proletariat, arguing that the uneducated masses are driven by blind resentment & are “practically impotent in the face of material difficulties”. Instead, the fate of the world rests in the hands of an intellectual elite who are a minority of clear headed, scientific & functional directors who will master & control the global machinery. This scientific dictatorship does not limit itself to economics & politics but extends its cold, calculating reach into the very biology of the human race. The Open Conspiracy demands the “practical recognition of the necessity for world biological controls”. Wells argues that man must escape the chaotic struggle for existence by implementing the “deliberate collective control of population as a primary condition”. Human reproduction can no longer be left to “lust & ignorance”. Instead, slight adjustments in social & economic arrangements will be used to supply inducements or discouragements to control the birth rate of specific types of people, exactly as the community’s directors see fit.
Wells views the masses of humanity as a useless, breeding swarm that must be curtailed. He states that modern machinery has eliminated the need for mere toilers, meaning that even at the lowest levels of society, “it is required that the human element should be select”. He even expresses a clear hope that in the future, “directed breeding” will come within the scope of this world control. This is a vision of a world where human beings are scientifically managed, bred & restricted like livestock to serve the sterile efficiency of a global machine.
Conclusion
H.G. Wells presents “The Open Conspiracy” as the awakening of mankind from an infantile nightmare, promising a future of health, abundance & magnanimity. However, a careful reading reveals a profoundly dystopian agenda. To achieve this promised peace, humanity must surrender all national identities, individual economic freedoms & traditional religious comforts. In their place, an unelected, scientific elite will impose a one world government, a new collective religion & strict biological controls over human reproduction. Wells’ blueprint for a world revolution is a direct testament to the dangers of utopian thinking, illustrating how the desire to perfectly organize society inevitably leads to the total eradication of human liberty.
